The problem with securing email is that it needs to be encrypted end-to-end to avoid it being intercepted while traveling through intermediary networks and the recipient also needs to have the same encryption system. The story quickly circulated that Edward Snowden had an account with Lavabit and probably played an important role in the pressure put on them by the NSA. Lavabit and Silent Circle were encrypted email services that decided to shut down their servers instead of giving in to the demands of the NSA to infringe on their privacy policy. With the revelations made by Edward Snowden, the issue has become much more apparent to the general public that was not aware of the vulnerabilities of email communications and how easy they could be snooped on. In fact, if secure communication is your priority, you should avoid using email all together. Email services are still a very popular communication solution, but securing them is not an easy task.
